NAS hosts a Stainless Steel Workshop for UofL Engineering students
On October 20th, 2023 North American Stainless hosted the first NAS-University of Louisville Stainless Steel Workshop for Engineering Students of the UofL Speed Engineering School.
The Workshop was hosted at the Mill situated in Ghent Kentucky and featured a morning classroom session followed by lunch and a tour of the plant.
The classroom session included the following topics:
General Knowledge on Stainless Steel:
- Stainless Steel Families: Austenitic, Ferritic, Duplex, Martensitic
- Influence of alloying elements: Cr, Ni, C, N, Mn, S, Cu, Si, Al , Ti, Mo
- Applications of Stainless Steel: Austenitic, Ferritic, Martensitic and Duplex Grade applications
Stainless Steel Fabrication process:
- Melt Shop
- Hot Rolling
- Cold Rolling
Types of corrosion:
- Uniform corrosion
- Pitting corrosion
- Crevice corrosion
- Galvanic corrosion
- Intergranular corrosion
- Stress corrosion cracking
Profitability of use of stainless steel:
- Life cycle costs
- Examples of structures with less/higher maintenance
Mechanical properties of stainless steel:
- Strain stress curves
- Elongation
- Deformation
- Impact sensitivity
- Temperature sensitivity
- Charpy test
- Fire resistance
Joining stainless steel:
- Welding
- Mechanical connectors
- Adhesives
- Press Fitting
Sustainability and environment considerations:
- Recycled content
- Leeds certification
The students that attended the workshop left with a better understanding of stainless steel both the product itself and the production process. In the future we hope that when they come across stainless steel as a possible option for a product or project the knowledge acquired will help them view stainless steel as the best option for many of these
